Building a secure European supply of battery-grade graphite anode material, sourced from our own deposit at Amitsoq.

GreenRoc aims to build a secure domestic supply of graphite anode material for the European battery industry, responsibly sourced at our own graphite deposit at Amitsoq in South Greenland.

GreenRoc is working to establish a processing plant to transform the graphite concentrate produced at Amitsoq into graphite active anode material. Today, European and North American battery producers rely fully on sourcing their graphite active anode material from China, which is more than 40 days of shipping away from Europe, compared to Amitsoq being only 5 days of shipping from major ports in Northern Europe.

The demand for graphite as anode material is set to increase manyfold in the coming decades.

In early 2026 GreenRoc constructed a pilot plant in Denmark to validate the processing of natural flake graphite into high-purity active anode material (AAM) for lithium-ion batteries.

The pilot facility will demonstrate key process steps including micronisation, spheronisation, and purification to 99.95% carbon content. It will also support the development of a hydrofluoric-acid-free purification process, reinforcing GreenRoc’s commitment to responsible and environmentally conscious production.

The results from the pilot plant will form the basis for the final design and Definitive Feasibility Study of GreenRoc’s planned full-scale AAM plant in Norway. In addition, the facility will produce material for customer qualification and off-take discussions, marking an important step toward commercial production.

GreenRoc has gained comprehensive insight into the processes and technology involved in the processing of graphite concentrate into AAM through the feasibility study conducted in 2023-2024. This AAM processing, which is currently completely dominated by China, involves three main steps: shaping, purification, and coating. GreenRoc utilizes proven technology at TRL 8, ensuring efficiency and reliability in the processing from graphite concentrate to battery-grade AAM.

In May 2024, GreenRoc completed a Pre-Feasibility Study for an AAM processing plant with a capacity of 80,000t/a graphite concentrate, yielding about 40,000t/a AAM, enough for 1 million electric cars annually. Following an update to the study in July 2024, the PFS shows the AAM plant to have a Post-Tax NPV8 of US$621M and an IRR of 26.5%.

In February 2026, test work showed that we can produce active anode material with less than 500 parts per million impurities, while significantly reducing operating costs compared with the assumptions in the 2024 PFS. Our pilot plant in Denmark is now building on this work and will provide material to potential off-taking companies.

GreenRoc has been awarded £1.2 million in funding from Denmark’s Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme (EUDP) to support the development of a hydrofluoric-acid-free purification process for active anode material (AAM).

The project is being carried out in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Danish Technological Institute (IPU), combining industrial development with leading academic and technical expertise.

The grant supports the construction and operation of GreenRoc’s pilot plant in Denmark, where environmentally responsible processing methods for battery-grade graphite are being validated. The EUDP backing highlights the strategic importance of establishing a sustainable European supply chain for critical battery materials and supports GreenRoc’s ambition to deliver low-carbon anode material to the growing EV market.
