At GreenRoc, sustainability is at the core of our business model and we are fully committed to upholding the highest Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards.
With a commitment to align with globally recognised ESG frameworks such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA), and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we are committed to creating long-term value for both our stakeholders and the planet.
Our ongoing ESG journey includes a submission to Digbee, an independent ESG assessment platform, which will benchmark our performance and ensure that we continuously improve our sustainability efforts. This transparent evaluation will allow us to track and publicly disclose our progress in a meaningful, data-driven way.
Our ESG strategy covers every aspect of our operations:
We aim to minimise our carbon footprint by producing natural flake graphite, which has a significantly lower CO2 impact compared to synthetic alternatives. We are also working towards green energy solutions for our mining and processing operations, including the use of electric mining fleets and renewable energy sources at our facilities. For the anode materials plant we will, to the extent possible, make use of CO2-neutral energy sources, and engage in reductions of energy and material consumption and optimize use of less hazardous chemical reactants.
GreenRoc is dedicated to fostering strong relationships with the communities where we operate. In Greenland, we actively engage with local stakeholders, conducting regular meetings with the residents of Nanortalik, the regional municipality (Kommune Kujalleq, located in Qaqortoq), and with local interested parties, business organisations and workers’ unions. Our initiatives, such as supporting local employment and contributing to community welfare programmes like the organisation Kalaallit Meerartaat/Greenlandic Children’s summer camp programme, are designed to promote sustainable development and long-term positive impact.
We adhere to the QCA Corporate Governance Code, ensuring that our corporate governance structure is robust and transparent. The GreenRoc board is committed to ethical decision-making and compliance with all regulatory requirements. Our operations in Greenland, for example, are conducted in close collaboration with government authorities, and we comply with all application and reporting obligations.
GreenRoc is committed to achieving these positive impacts:
GreenRoc’s production of natural flake graphite will play a critical role in reducing global CO2 emissions, particularly within the EV industry. Natural graphite, formed over millions of years within the Earth’s crust, offers a sustainable alternative to synthetic graphite, which requires significant energy inputs and produces a high carbon footprint, besides being based on oil production. By leveraging natural resources and sourcing green energy for our downstream processing plant, we aim to drastically cut emissions at every stage of production.
At GreenRoc’s Amitsoq mine, sustainability will be woven into the fabric of our operations. Our underground mining approach will not only protect the surrounding environment but also allow for the recycling of up to 85% of tailings as mine backfill. This innovative approach will reduce waste and lower our environmental footprint, setting a new standard for responsible mining.
To meet the growing demand for sustainable battery materials, GreenRoc is committed to developing eco-friendly purification methods for graphite anode production. In collaboration with our technical partner ProGraphite, we are advancing techniques that minimise the use of harmful chemicals. Additionally, we intend to establish a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility, which will ensure that our downstream operations maintain the highest environmental standards while recycling as much of the reagents as possible.
Safety and inclusivity are integral to GreenRoc’s ESG approach. We are committed to operating in a zero-harm environment, where thorough risk assessments and emergency response plans will be in place to protect all employees. Our goal is to create an attractive workplace that fosters diversity, equality, and inclusion regardless of our employee’s gender, race or age.
Environmental stewardship is a key element of our sustainability mission. GreenRoc is actively exploring low-carbon solutions for its upstream mining activities, including the potential for electric underground mining fleets and ammonia-driven generators. The proximity of our mining operations in Southern Greenland to our customer markets also provides a natural advantage in minimising CO2 emissions from shipping, compared to traditional supply chains that rely on longer, more carbon-intensive routes from China.
GreenRoc’s sustainability strategy aligns with key UN SDGs, advancing global efforts to build a more sustainable and equitable future:
We will ensure the health and safety of our employees through stringent safety protocols, promoting a zero-harm working environment.
We are committed to creating long-term employment opportunities and fostering sustainable economic growth in the communities we operate in, especially in Greenland.
We will promote inclusivity and equal opportunities for all employees, ensuring that our operations actively reduce inequalities within our workforce and the local communities.
Our production methods will reduce the use of harmful chemicals and we will adhere to responsible consumption and production practices, including recycling wherever possible.
Our operations will focus on reducing CO2 emissions through the use of natural graphite and renewable energy, making significant contributions to global climate action.
We will minimise the environmental impact on marine ecosystems by optimising our shipping routes and ensuring that our operations do not harm local water sources.
Our sustainable mining practices will protect biodiversity and reduce land degradation, helping to preserve natural habitats near our operations.
We will continue to collaborate with local communities, government authorities and sustainability organisations to foster partnerships that advance shared sustainability goals.
