Amitsoq to anode: the carbon footprint

GreenRoc’s carbon assessment gives the Amitsoq development team a clearer picture of where to focus work on future emissions reductions.

The initial model follows the planned supply chain from mining in southern Greenland through to coated spherical purified graphite, the material used in battery anodes. Its indicative results, which have not yet undergone external review, show approximately:

• 87% — downstream processing into anode material
• 9% — mining and graphite concentrate production
• 4% — transport between the mine and processing plant

Processing includes shaping, purification and coating. The energy and materials used in these stages account for most of the modelled footprint.

For GreenRoc, this breakdown helps focus design work on the largest contributors. Developing Amitsoq alongside its anode-material processing programme allows the team to assess carbon-reduction opportunities across the connected supply chain.
